Buckeyes are a rare mascot but because they are the mascot of Ohio State University they are popular nonetheless.

What is a Buckeye

A buckeye is the nut of the buckeye tree that indigenous to Ohio and surrounding states. The nut forms on the tree in a green, spiky shell which opens up to reveal the buckeye inside as the nuts mature and fall to the ground. Buckeyes get their name because the nuts are dark brown with a small lighter brown spot, giving the appearance of an eye.
