Tommie Smith was an American Olympian at the 1968 Olympics where he won the 200 meter event. After raising his black-gloved hand in a gesture of support for black power on the medal stand, he was banned from the Olympic Village and sent home. Now he, along with John Carlos who joined him in his expression, is considered by many to be a hero of the civil rights movement.
